The Environmental Affairs and Community Service Sector at the Faculty of Physical Education, Sohag University, organized a scientific symposium entitled “Sports and Climate Change,” in cooperation with Students for Egypt and the Faculty Students Union, in the glass hall in the old university campus.
Dr. Mostafa Abdel-Khalek, President of the University, said that the organization of this symposium coincides with the efforts made by the state at the Cop 27 Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, where the symposium discussed a number of axes about climate changes and their impact on the globe and future expectations of the damages of climate changes and coping mechanisms, to The aspect of school sports and its impact on climate changes, in addition to discussing sporting events and sports facilities, the extent of practicing sports activities, and their impact and vulnerability to climate changes and their management mechanisms, how to confront these changes.
Dr. Ahmed Abdullah, acting dean of the college, explained that more than 500 male and female students from different academic teams participated in the symposium, and a group of athletes and members of sports and youth bodies in the governorate, adding that it concluded with several recommendations, including the need to switch to clean energy in managing operations in sports facilities and Manufacture of environmentally friendly sports equipment and tools, in addition to developing a plan by the state to get rid of artificial turf stadiums so as not to disrupt or stop the sports activities and events based on them, as these stadiums greatly affect carbon emissions and the health of practitioners.
Dr. Mamdouh Al-Sayed, Vice Dean of the College for Community Service and Environmental Development, added that the recommendations of the symposium also dealt with the importance of converting sports facilities into green facilities with irrigation systems and the operation of all its equipment and devices used by relying on clean energy, and setting controls for school sports in terms of the practice environment, its timing and the tools used in it. In addition to developing a national strategy to transform Egyptian sport from the influences in increasing the size of the damage caused by climate change to a tool to support, treat, and establish habits and behaviors that reduce harmful practices and support positive, beneficial practices.
It is worth noting that the symposium was attended by Dr. Muhammad Tawfiq, Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Professor of Climate Geography, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Burai Qabil, former Dean of the College and Professor of Curricula and Teaching Methods at the College, Dr. Bassam Salah Muhammad Ali, Department of Sports Management and Recreation, and Dr. Muhammad Abul Fotouh Saad, Department of Sports Training and Sciences. the movement.
